Global Climate Action

Work So Far.

“Action must come from governments, cities, regions, businesses and investors. Everyone has a role to play in effectively implementing the Paris Agreement.” – United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

This work is still in progress, but some of the things that are being done are: mapping out the political economy of carbon-related sectors and finding ways to get stakeholders involved in sector reform; making sure that projects are made so that local communities can benefit fairly and in a meaningful way from green growth investments; doing gender and vulnerability analyses to find gaps and make sure that women and underrepresented groups are involved in decisions about carbon-related sectors; and making sure that projects are designed so that local communities can benefit fairly and in a meaningful way from green growth.

1972.

Stockholm Summit

The first international environment summit, also known as the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, took place in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972. The main focus of the summit was the increasing concern over environmental degradation and the need for global action to address these issues. During the summit, a number of important agreements were reached, including the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to coordinate international environmental efforts. The summit was widely seen as a turning point in the global environmental movement, and laid the groundwork for future environmental agreements and initiatives.

1992.

Rio Convention

A worldwide environmental treaty known as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was approved on May 9, 1992, and it was made available for signing during the Earth Summit that took place in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to June 14, 1992. In order to prevent “dangerous anthropogenic interference” with the climate system, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) had presented a plan of action at the convention that aimed to maintain the existing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

1997.

Kyoto Protocol

On December 11, 1997, the Kyoto Protocol was formally adopted. It took a while for ratification, and on February 16th, 2005, it became effective. The Kyoto Protocol has 192 Parties as of right now. The Kyoto Protocol imposes legally enforceable carbon reduction objectives on the European Union and 36 developed nations. Given that industrialized nations are mostly at blame for the current high levels of GHG emissions in the atmosphere, it merely bonds them and puts a greater pressure on the notion of “shared but differentiated responsibility and distinct capabilities.” The creation of flexible market mechanisms, which are based on the trading of emissions permits, was a key component of the Kyoto Protocol.

2015.

Paris Agreement

The Paris Agreement’s main goal is to enhance the global response to climate change by keeping this century’s global temperature rise below 2°C over pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to restrict it to 1.5°C. The agreement also intends to strengthen countries’ abilities to address climate change through nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and to stimulate these efforts in the future. A more robust and inclusive structure enhances activity and fosters transparency in the Agreement. All Parties must report emissions and implementation efforts regularly. The Paris Agreement recognizes the urgent need to increase global climate change response. Paris Agreement decision text recognizes all sector commitments.
